Design electronics with discrete components.
Get your parts funded and earn cool prizes
like an oscilloscope.
Building electronic projects with modules is easy.
What if every single component in your project was hand placed by you?
Make schematics, calculate values, draw diagrams, and maybe learn Maxwell's equations. Submit your journal to earn funding.
Solder, analyze, and perfect your build. Log it and earn Ions.
Spend Ions on lab upgrades like oscilloscopes and bench supplies.
Every project you complete earns Ions, the currency of this YSWS. Spend them on real lab equipment.
Build something cool? Write a build guide with all the theory, math, logic, and components so others can replicate and learn from it. Submit it with your build to earn a Learning Grant on top of your parts funding.
Anything you want that uses discrete components! Some examples include a universal PWM generator, synthesizer, or a breadboard computer.
No! Instead of using a devboard, try implementing the chip in your project. For example, use an ATmega chip instead of an Arduino board!
Individual ICs, passives, transistors, diodes, etc. No breakout boards or modules.
Up to $300 depending on your design complexity.
Any teenagers aged 13–18 anywhere can participate in Hack Club Discrete.
No double-dipping! Projects submitted to Discrete cannot be submitted to any other YSWS.
A grant awarded to those who write a guide. It can be used on anything to expand your electronics knowledge (books, courses, etc.)
Ask me (@Sidd) on the Slack! I'm always happy to help.
Drop the modules and learn real electrical engineering. The magic smoke stays inside if you do it right.
